35-metre-high paint shop sets standards in lean production
With 66 robots performing numerous tasks, the new paint shop of company Skoda Auto in Mlada Boleslav can be considered as one of the most modern and sustainable facilities of its kind in Europe. About 168,000 car bodies are painted in a three-shift pattern annually. The plant’s total painting capacity increased to 812,000 car bodies once the facility went into operation. The 35-metre-high paint shop has seven floors, making it currently the tallest building on the grounds of Skoda Auto’s main plant.
Significant reduced material consumption
Compared to conventional paint shops the company uses 210 grams less solvent and 17% less clear lacquer per vehicle. In addition, with the aid of a new exhaust air purification system, the company has also been able to reduce the amount of paint residue by more than two kilograms per car body. And the company uses an all-new concept where the dryers are positioned across the car body allowing shorter overall dryer units.
Prestigious Automotive Lean Production award
Skoda Auto has also received the ‘Special Award – Excellent Start-up of a New Paint Shop’ at this year’s Automotive Lean Production Awards for the paint shop. The Automotive Lean Production Awards are presented by the industry journal Automobil Produktion and the management consultancy Agamus.
